Head football coach resigns from College
Head Football Coach Brent Becker recently resigned for personal reasons. The current defensive coordinator, Jim Catanzaro, will become head coach for the upcoming football season, according to Athletic Director Jackie Slaats.
Becker was the head coach for four seasons and the defensive coordinator for two years prior to his promotion. During his time at the College, the Foresters had an overall record of 32-28 and posted a Midwest Conference record of 29-25. The team earned 46 all-conference honors and was named academic all-conference 32 times.
"Our football program and the College have both benefitted from his efforts over the past six years, and we certainly wish him well in his future endeavors," Slaats said
Catanzaro was the Foresters' defensive coordinator for more than three seasons. During this time, the team has received 18 all-conference selections and has finished among the top teams in the league in several defensive categories.
Catanzaro's new position as head coach will be effective through the 2010 football season, and a national search for the head coach will be conducted per College policy following this season.
"I am excited about the energy and passion he will bring to Forester football," Slaats said. "He has proven to be an excellent coach, a skilled recruiter, and a valuable member of our College community."
College alumni involvement increases
Alumni participation at annual events and donations to the College has increased.
The College has received almost six percent more in alumni donations than during the 2005-2006 school year, according to Jeff Sundberg, the faculty representative to the Capital Campaign Committee. The percent of alumni who are donating reached 29.5 percent during the 2007-2008 school year.
Sundberg said even the 24 percent participation rate a few years ago is a "significant improvement" from what the College received 15 years ago and "provides a lot of promise for the future."
Event attendance also has increased from 40 people per event during 2005-2006 to 88 per event last year.
