Lake Forest College will be adding another varsity sport, Swimgolf, this next fall. The decision came about last week.
"I am very excited," said freshman Putt Dive. "I used to play Swimgolf in high school, and I can't wait to get it going again next year."
The Foresters are the first collegiate team to add the sport. The idea behind the addition is that the college will have a head start on the other schools. Coach Swin GeButterfly was hired as the Foresters first ever Swimgolf coach.
"This is a great opportunity for us to get ahead," said Coach GeButterfly. "I am currently recruiting three high school seniors who have expressed great interest to play next year."
Swimgolf involves a sort of marathon. First, the Swimgolfer has to swim 50 miles. Immediately after that, the Swimgolfer has to run five miles to the nearest golf course where they have to complete a 18-hole-round in under 50 minutes. The Swimgolfer with the lowest time swimming and the best golf score wins the match.
"This is one of the most popular sports in the world," said sophomore Nuse Ports. "I can't wait to go to the games. It's all that my friends are talking about."
Lake Forest College is in the process of creating a new conference to compete in called the "Midwestern Swimgolfing Conference" (MSC). The College is hoping that the popular sport will catch on in neighboring colleges. Since the announcement last week, there has been at least 60 different colleges and universities who have took interest in creating a program for the sport.
"It's crazy," said senior Friez Tyle. "It's just like slinkies in the 1990's. It's spreading everywhere and to everyone."
