President Schutt gives his angle

Matt Fernholz might be surprised to learn that I was pleased to read his guest column about the recent visit to campus by former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. The column is very well written and, in between his attacks on me, Matt raises some important questions about guest speakers on campus.

Campus Communication Portals: the next step

With intra-college communication a major issue this year, faculty members have expressed their disapproval of MyForester as an effective tool for posting announcements; students rarely use the system. Consequently, the campus is not well-informed and many events are not effectively publicized through the system.

Letters To The Editor: Current Events?

This past issue, The Stentor, an "award winning" newspaper, published an article on the Darfur region in the African country of Sudan. The purpose of this article was clearly to inform the student body on the humanitarian crisis faced in the country that has been torn by civil war for the past 21 years.

Disgrace and the Missed Opportunity

Fernholz, Matt
It appears as if President Schutt will be leaving Lake Forest College to accept a position at the UN working on either the Arms Control or the Human Rights Commission. How else to explain our dear President's pandering towards the former head of a state which the United State's does not diplomatically recognize? In case you missed it (as President Schutt hoped you would judging by the level of secrecy the event was given) former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami was brought to campus under the watchful eye of Ahmad Sadri and the State Department.

Pope: arms wide shut

Recently, Pope Benedict XVI gave a speech in Germany, in which he quoted from the writings of a 14th century Byzantine emperor who said that everything the Prophet Muhammad brought was "evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.

Girl on bike pops Lake Forest Bubble

Something major has recently affected my relationship with the residents of Lake Forest and Lake Forest as a community. A CAR HIT ME WHILE I WAS RIDING MY BIKE. It was ridiculous, to say the least. It was a simple situation; me on my bike on the sidewalk, him in his SUV pulling out of a parking lot.

Thank you John Calvin

Let's face it. Most of our lives, we didn't have much of a choice. I'm not really talking about birth, or life itself, because I bet most of us find that a pretty good idea. What I really mean is, after that first important little step, we didn't choose to go to school, or the method in which we were taught, or what TV shows we could watch, or can watch, or what house we lived in, what town, who our family was, who we could meet to make friends, all of it.

Letters To The Editor: You've Got What You Asked For

If Jim Kersten ("The Least We Can Ask For," 9/28/06) can use the opinion page of the Stentor to slander various members of the College community, I also would like the opportunity to throw my wrench into the Stygian pool of campus politics. It would seem that Mr.

Letters To The Editor: Sad Profanity

This is in response to the article by Michael Sorenson about profanity at our college. I was very sad to learn that one of our professors was disrespected. This is unacceptable. Irrespective of the fact that Dr. J, is a professor who makes sure you understand the material and a wonderful person to get to know, she is a teacher and teachers command respect no matter what.

Town-College Q&A / GA President Alex Hales

S: How important do you think it is for the college to have good relations with the town of Lake Forest? A: Personally, I think that the college is an asset to the town and the town is an asset to the college. It benefits both parties to have a vested interest in one another.

Behind the Bahá'í in Iran

The Bahá'í Faith is not recognized as a religion in Iran, and therefore its adherents - the largest religious minority of Iran - have no rights according to the government. Founded more that one hundred and sixty yeas ago, the Bahá'í Faith, with over 5 million adherents worldwide is one of the world's fastest growing independent religions.

Randumb Thots: LFC's Most Under-appreciated

Recently bestowed upon me was a gift - not just any gift, but a very special book entitled "A Winkle in Time," featuring the one and only Mr. Winkle. (Very important: If you do not have the pleasure of knowing who Mr. Winkle is, please Google him immediately!) Mr.

Homecoming: more bang for your buck

Homecoming is a complex, multi-layered activity. On the surface, it is a time friends, schoolmates, alumni, and faculty get together for a day filled with school spirit and togetherness. But beneath that layer is that part of Homecoming involves drinking, canoodling, and creating memories (many of which will need to be pieced together in the cafeteria over eggs and bacon the next morning).

New Plan: More costly...less flexibility?

The College's latest meal plan has led to some kinks: an over-crowded cafeteria, fewer people using the option for non-Cafeteria dining options during mealtime, and an increase in the cost of the meal plan. The Stentor supports the Administration and Student Government in how it valued student opinion throughout the survey and understanding that students wanted "more flexibility" and the college had to pay more for the added service of the Mohr Student Center, but The Stentor editorial board is asking for a thorough assessment as to how the meal plan is meeting student's needs and how the plan can be better advertised and demystified.

Word of the week: Scatological

I lived the better part of my life not knowing the true meaning of "scatological." By "better" I not only mean that I have been alive longer believing in the wrong definition than the right, but also that it was by far a better existence before the truth was revealed to me.

"Freshies" hot on our heels

First and foremost, I want to give a big shout out to my upperclassmen. We've served our time at the bottom, and kids, the top is sweet. We know the system (how to work it, and avoid it), avoid rush hour in the caf, call professors by their first name, and are cool simply because must of us have the vertical student ID.
