Miya Rodolfo-Sioson never fell victim to the tragedy that drastically changed her life on Nov. 1, 1991. Despite being paralyzed from the neck down, she became a leading advocate for disabled people's rights.



The sole survivor of the Gang Lu shooting spree on the UI campus 17 years ago, Rodolfo-Sioson died of advanced breast cancer Wednesday morning. She was 40.

A research group on Monday confirmed UI professors' suspicions the nation has entered into a true recession.



"It's not like naming who won 'American Idol,' " said UI economics Associate Professor John Solow. "It's not hard to figure out we're in a negative economic situation. This shouldn't come as a surprise to people."
